British DJ and former BBC Radio 1 presenter Tim Westwood has been charged with multiple sexual offences, including four counts of rape, the Metropolitan Police has said.

The 68-year-old also faces nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault, with the allegations involving seven women and spanning from 1983 to 2016.

He is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 10.

According to a BBC report, the earliest allegation dates back to 1983 and involves the alleged indecent assault of a 17-year-old girl in Fulham, London. The oldest rape charge relates to an alleged attack on a female aged between 17 and 18 in London between 1995 and 1996.

Westwood is also accused of raping a female aged between 17 and 18 in London between 2000 and 2001, and raping another woman in her 20s in 2010. The most recent charge involves an alleged sexual assault of a woman in her 20s in Finchley, London.

Chief Crown Prosecutor Lionel Idan said prosecutors found sufficient evidence to take the case to trial, adding that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings. He reminded the public that criminal proceedings are active and that the defendant is entitled to a fair trial.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police urged other potential victims to come forward, describing it as an act of courage to report offences of this nature.
