Tears flowed freely in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, as Moses Are, popularly known as Baba Gbenro, was laid to rest.

The 65-year-old gospel filmmaker and actor, who passed away in November 2024 after battling liver disease, was given a befitting farewell by loved ones, colleagues, and admirers.

His burial, held amid solemn hymns and heartfelt prayers, took place on Friday, with mourners dressed in white and blue to honour his legacy.

Photos shared by Christian video podcast Zion Kulture on X (formerly Twitter) captured emotional moments from the ceremony, where family, friends, and well-wishers gathered to pay their last respects.

Final farewell for a legend

In one of the images, Baba Gbenro’s casket, decorated with gold trimmings and floral designs, lay open as mourners bid him a tearful goodbye. His impact in gospel movie production was evident, as many from the Christian film industry were present to honour his memory.Baba Gbenro, the founder and international president of Calvary Movies Drama Ministry, dedicated his life to spreading Christian messages through films.

He was also the CEO of Calvary Movies Television, a platform that showcased faith-based productions.

A legacy in gospel filmmaking

He gained widespread recognition for his role in the Mount Zion Faith Ministries’ series Abattoir, which was well received by audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
His storytelling, infused with Christian themes, inspired many, making him a respected figure in gospel filmmaking.His colleague, Oluwaseun Adejumobi, announced his passing on Instagram, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow Christian filmmakers. Many described him as a humble, God-fearing man who used his talent to uplift others.

A journey of faith and service

Born on August 12, 1959, Baba Gbenro’s journey started in a village in Kano State, where he had his early education before moving to Plateau State for further studies.
He later relocated to Southwestern Nigeria, where he pursued higher education and completed his NYSC in Jigawa State.Throughout his career, he remained committed to gospel storytelling, believing that films were a powerful tool for evangelism. His contributions to Christian drama earned him a place among the pioneers of faith-based filmmaking in Nigeria.

Survived by family and faith

Baba Gbenro is survived by his wife, Bamike Are, and two children, a boy and a girl, as well as a host of family members, protégés, and admirers who will continue to uphold his legacy.

His passing marks the end of an era, but his works live on, touching lives and strengthening faith through the messages he left behind.
