Nollywood veteran, Chiwetalu Agu, has given a warning to those rushing into marriage, saying it is not a must to get married at all costs.

In the video, which has now gone viral, Agu stressed that being desperate to settle down can lead to dangerous consequences.

He advised singles to be cautious when choosing a partner and urged those already in troubled marriages to prioritise their safety above societal pressure.

‘Marriage is not a do-or-die affair. If you have an abusive partner, run for your life. If you are in a toxic relationship, run for your life. If you are not happy in your marriage, seek help or run for your life,’ he warned.

The seasoned actor, who has been in the film industry for decades, also hammered on the dangers of staying in an unhealthy marriage.

He pointed out that enduring pain in the name of keeping a home has cost many their lives.

‘Divorce is better than “rest in peace”. “I want to stay because of my children”. That was how a lady was killed. Now, who will take care of the kids? Is it the man that killed you? Or the relatives who love their own families?’ he asked.

Agu also stressed the importance of carrying out thorough background checks before committing to marriage.

He advised singles to be careful about their reasons for tying the knot, warning that physical attraction and peer pressure are not good enough reasons to walk down the aisle.

‘He is handsome; I want to marry him’—see you, see death. ‘My mates are all married, but I’m still single’—see you, see death,’ he added.
