Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has stirred reactions online after posting bikini photos to mark her 30th birthday.
The Grammy winner, who will be headlining the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Halftime Show in New Jersey alongside American stars Doja Cat and J Balvin, shared a series of holiday pictures on her Instagram and X pages on Friday.
The images showed Tems in vibrant two-piece swimwear during a luxury getaway in Marbella, Spain.
But while fans flooded the comments with fire emojis and birthday wishes, the post sparked backlash from a section of Nigerians on X.
Social media commentator, Daniel Regha, wrote, “Tems went from being decent to showing off her body. Disappointing.” The tweet, which has been viewed over 500,000 times, triggered a flurry of mixed reactions.
@munagodd said, “You must act or appear a certain way to reach a certain level in this entertainment industry.”
“I can sense that she doesn’t feel comfortable about this,” added @IkennaOkeh.
“Omoh but when Tems turn this one?” asked @Mrlekan213.
Some, however, defended her. @ololade10_ posted, “Her body, her choice. Focus on the music, not the body.”
@chinwe said, “I don’t support this one oo,” while @AnyawuX dismissed the hype, saying, “Nothing special.”
“The lap just full everywhere,” wrote @Nobleprnce. @OfficialJoel4_ added, “Serious editing.”
@pridecrib expressed concern, saying, “Them don fine influence this auntie to dey wear rubbish online. E pain me, Aura you do dis one.”
Despite the uproar, Tems has continued to enjoy a steady rise. In February, she won a Grammy for Best African Music Performance, and she also became a part-owner of San Diego FC, a U.S.-based Major League Soccer team.
She has yet to respond to the social media criticism.
