
Son of the landlord of the collapsed building, Lanre Olagunju, said the incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m., with a casualty recorded.
He revealed that the building did not show signs of defect before the sudden collapse, saying other occupants of the building immediately relocated after a close shave with death.
Others who were injured, including two siblings of the deceased, are receiving treatments in a nearby hospital.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who visited the site, described the accident as devastating and agonising.
He called on occupants of dilapidated buildings statewide to relocate, to safeguard their lives.
Oyebanji, who was represented by his Deputy, Mrs Monisade Afuye, also visited Adeyinka Adebayo General Hospital, where some victims were receiving medicare to show sympathy and wish them quick recovery.
Oyebanji promised to pay the victim’s medical bills. He also directed the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (EKSEMA) to arrange for habitable residence for the embattled family.
He also directed the Commissioner for Health, Dr Oyebanji Filani, to ensure that the victims receive adequate medical attention to fast track their recovery.
To forestall further occurrence in the state, Oyebanji said the Ministry of Physical and Urban Planning, would begin aggressive enforcement of laws that would dislodge those living in dilapidated buildings across the state.
According to him, the state has existing laws that govern building habitation, saying the laws would be stringently executed to halt reoccurrence of such devastating scenario.
The governor appealed to the victims’ family to take heart, promising that the state would take necessary actions to support them and bring them back to their feet sound and safe.
