The Taraba State chapter of the Nigeria Association of the Blind has appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas to provide financial support and participate in the upcoming 2025 International White Cane Day celebration.
In an open letter signed by the State Chairman, Wanderimam Teyang, the association urged the governor to approve funding for the two-day event and to personally attend, describing his presence as a strong show of commitment to inclusion and the welfare of persons with disabilities.
The annual celebration, scheduled for October 15 and 16, highlights the achievements, independence, and resilience of the blind and visually impaired community.
According to information obtained by The Guardian, the first day will feature a symbolic road walk from the Ministry of Works to the Government House, while the second day will host a grand celebration and awareness programme.
“We humbly plead with Your Excellency to remember our programme and grace the occasion with your presence. Your attendance will not only bring immense joy and encouragement to our members but also send a powerful message of inclusion and compassion for all persons with disabilities in the state,” the letter read in part.
While commending Governor Kefas for his active participation in various state functions, the association expressed concern that he has yet to attend any event organized by the blind community.
They expressed optimism that this year’s White Cane Day would mark a turning point in the administration’s engagement with visually impaired citizens.
“As a disability-friendly governor, we are confident in your continued commitment to uplifting the lives of the blind and visually impaired,” the association stated.
The group also appealed for the release of funds requested through a memo submitted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Reintegration to enable smooth preparations for the event.
International White Cane Day, marked globally on October 15, raises awareness about the rights, independence, and mobility of blind and visually impaired individuals.
The Taraba State chapter expressed hope that the 2025 edition would reflect the state’s active commitment to inclusion and equal opportunity for all.
