2027 Elections: Labour party fixes May 23 for presidential primary

The Labour Party (LP)

The Labour Party has scheduled its presidential primary for May 23, 2027, as part of preparations for the next general elections.

The date was approved by the party National Executive Council (NEC) at a statutory meeting held in Abuja and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by the Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Interim National Chairman, Ken Asogwa, who said the timetable aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines.

According to him, the party has also fixed April 15 for the submission of its membership register to INEC, while primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly will hold on May 15.

Asogwa further stated that the NEC ratified the schedule for ward, local government, and state congresses, set for March 26, March 28, and March 31, respectively. The party’s national convention, he added, will take place on April 11.

He said the NEC, the party’s highest decision-making organ after the national convention, also reviewed recent internal developments, including the “unfortunate invasion” of its national secretariat by hoodlums allegedly backed by “rogue elements.”

Following the review, the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), acting on the recommendations of its Peace, Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee chaired by Salisu Mohammed, approved the suspension of some members.

The affected individuals were sanctioned over alleged indiscipline, anti-party activities, and involvement in the disruption at the party’s headquarters.

As part of efforts to strengthen its internal structure, the NEC approved the expansion of the party’s membership register through a hybrid system combining digital registration with manual enrolment in rural communities.

The initiative, Asogwa noted, is aimed at modernising the party’s database, improving transparency, and deepening participatory democracy.

The council also directed that all vacant positions within the party be filled through interim appointments to ensure administrative continuity pending the conduct of substantive congresses.

In addition, members were urged to utilise the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms to address grievances and promote unity.

The NEC also welcomed a recent Federal High Court ruling affirming Senator Nenadi Usman as Interim National Chairman and passed a vote of confidence in her leadership, as well as the Interim National Working Committee, the BoT, and key stakeholders including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.

Asogwa commended INEC for its prompt compliance with the court judgment.
