Only 4,359 out of the 19,482 candidates who applied to study for undergraduate courses at the University of Ibadan (UI) had been offered admission.

Only 4,359 out of the 19,482 candidates who applied to study for undergraduate courses at the University of Ibadan (UI) had been offered admission.

The Senate of the University had approved the provisional offer of undergraduate admission to the candidates for the 2019/2020 academic session.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof Idowu Olayinka, who presided over the emergency Senate meeting, said out of this figure, 4,100 had been processed through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) while about 3, 709 had paid the acceptance fee for admission.

There are indication that the figure does not indicate that the UI exhausted all its admission quota for undergraduate admissions as given to it by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

JAMB had in recent years revealed that universities do not usually exhaust their admissions quota. In 2018, over 350 thousand available spaces were not utilised by tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

This is even as some qualified candidates would be adamant to study particular courses irrespective of available alternatives. While 19, 482 sat for the post- Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination at the Ibadan university, 12, 450 scored 50 per cent and above and were subjected to cut-off marks set for courses to select the best of the applicants.
