The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has revealed in a report that 720,000 lives are being lost globally to suicide every year.
The NOA issued the report on Thursday on the occasion of the World Suicide Prevention Day, as it joined the world to raise awareness, break the stigma, and remind Nigerians that suicide is preventable.
“What we should know and do: Every year, over 720,000 lives are lost globally to suicide. Each loss deeply affects families and communities,” it wrote.
The NOA added that suicide is preventable and together, the citizens of Nigeria can change the narrative.
It also urged the public to ensure that they break harmful myths and stigma, while encouraging open, compassionate dialogue.
The agency further called on Nigerians to always check in on family, friends, and neighbours because sometimes, a simple question can save a life.
It advised people to listen to one another with patience and without judgment, and encourage those struggling to seek professional help from doctors, counselors, or hotlines.
“Share information on where support can be found. Use words that heal, your kindness and care can bring hope,” the NOA wrote on its official X account.
“World Suicide Prevention Day is not only about remembrance but about hope. Let us stand together against stigma and show that every life matters.”
