A don at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has commended Yoruba language advocate and Wikimedia community leader, Isaac Olatunde, for his contributions to the promotion and preservation of Yoruba studies.
The recognition came during the institution’s 47th Inaugural Lecture held on Monday, where the keynote lecturer, Professor Temitope Olumuyiwa, highlighted Olatunde’s efforts in strengthening Yoruba Orthography.
Professor Olumuyiwa noted that Olatunde’s work has been critical in ensuring the Yoruba language retains an academically recognised and standardised structure. “His dedication has created pathways for consistent learning, research, and the preservation of Yoruba culture,” the lecturer said.
Olatunde, who has been active in advancing indigenous language use on digital platforms, has played a leading role in supporting Yoruba Wikipedia, where he has served as an administrator since 2019. He has also spearheaded projects focused on Yoruba literature and oral history documentation, bringing both academic and community-driven initiatives together.
The acknowledgement at AAUA, stakeholders said, reflects a growing partnership between universities and grassroots advocates in strengthening indigenous languages. They believe that such recognition can inspire further investment in local language development and cultural preservation across Nigeria.
