Abia State Homeland Security Commissioner, Chief Sopuruchi Bekee, has clarified that it were shanties and brothels, where criminal elements hide and from where they attack unsuspecting citizens, that were demolished at Lokpanta Cattle Market in Umunneochi Local Council and not Igbo Quarters.

In a press statement, Bekee said the clarification became imperative because attention was drawn to videos circulating on social media purporting that demolished quarters at the cattle market were Igbo quarters.

The commissioner disclosed that, recently, a kidnapper, who is a member of the gang terrorising travellers around the area, was arrested.

He said: “For the avoidance of doubt, the demolition was carried out by security agents and representatives of government of Abia, based on verified information that criminals are using the place as launching pad to attack and kidnap citizens.

“Our security operations within that axis are aimed at rooting out criminal elements and no stone will be left unturned until our aim is achieved.

“We appreciate the support of citizens and residents of the area, who are providing needed information and wish to assure that soon, we would dominate the area to ensure security of life and property.”

Recall that the Cattle Market at Umunneochi Council axis has been witnessing criminal activities, including kidnappings and armed robberies, which turned the area into serious security risk.

This prompted the state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, to constitute a committee to address the matter and further directed the council chairman to undertake necessary action, including demolition of identified criminal hideouts.
