Abia governor’s wife rescues indigent nursing mothers detained over hospital bills
Wife of the Abia State governor, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, extended her hand of fellowship and humanity at the weekend when she rescued seven indigent mothers who were trapped in the hospital after their discharge for inability to settle their hospital bills.
Not long after the plight of the mothers filtered into her ears, she visited the post-natal ward of the Federal Medical Center, Umuahia, where they were awaiting release.
While at the hospital, she was also informed of another indigent patient and the only survivor of a motor accident that occurred along the Umuahia- Okigwe expressway two weeks ago in which over thirteen people died. He could not settle his accumulated bills.
Moved by these, Mrs. Ikpeazu said it was not worth the ordeal for the seven nursing mothers and the accident survivor, who should be reunited with their families at home to remain in the hospital for inability to settle their bills.
She thereafter effected their release after the sum of N1.5 million was paid to the hospital authorities. She also presented each of the nursing mothers with gift items for themselves and their babies.
One of the beneficiaries, who was delivered of twin babies, Mrs. Goodness Nwachukwu, on behalf of the others, thanked the governor’s wife for her kindness. According to her, her poor husband was already planning to sell their village plot of land to raise funds for the medical expenses before the succour came.
