The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has slammed the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) with a fine of N300m over infractions and violation of regulations.

NERC, in Order Number 169 issued yesterday, blamed AEDC for the death of a four year-old boy, Mohammed Arafat Jibril, who died on April 11, 2019 at an unlocked substation in Maikunkele, Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State.

It, therefore, ordered the company to pay N50m to the boy’s family and N250m for the infractions.

NERC said: “AEDC shall pay a fine of N250m to the commission for infractions and violations identified in this order. This fine shall be due and payable by May 20, 2019.

“AEDC shall pay N50m to the family of the late Jibril as compensation to his family and this shall be made in a formal presentation at the commission on May 28, 2019.”
