Abuja metro rail transports 250,000 passengers in 100 days
The Abuja Rail Mass Transit, commonly known as the Metro Rail, has successfully transported over 250,000 passengers in its first 100 days of operation.
The milestone was announced by John Zhao, an official from the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), which constructed and operated the rail system.
In a post on X, Zhao stated, “The Phase I of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit has been operating safely for over 100 days! Consisting of two lines with a total length of 45 km and 12 stations, the maximum operating speed of the trains can reach 100 km/h.”

He noted the significant impact of the rail system, which connects the city center, the international airport, and Kubwa satellite town, saying it has “significantly reduced traffic congestion in the capital.”
The Metro Rail began commercial operations on May 29, 2024, after being commissioned by President Bola Tinubu. In a bid to encourage ridership, President Tinubu recently approved the extension of free train rides on the Abuja Rail Mass Transit for an additional six months, following an earlier two-month free ride initiative announced by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.
