South East leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has said the party recognises Sen. Attan Achonu as its sole candidate for Imo State governorship election slated for November 11, 2023, following his emergence from the party’s primary, held in Owerri last Saturday.

The South East National Vice Chairman of the party, Chief Innocent Okeke, in a statement, yesterday, said LP’s Saturday governorship primary is the most transparent, freest and credible in the history of party primary in Imo.

Okeke stressed that LP has continued to demonstrate its determination to offer Nigerians visionary and purposeful leadership, as well as good governance by its adherence to due process, credibility and transparency in its exercises.

He said: “It was due to credibility of the exercise that after declaration of result, other aspirants, who believed they lost to a fair contest, commended the transparent way the primary was conducted and congratulated the winner.
“Contrary to speculations in some quarters, LP has no two governorship candidates. Our candidate is Athan Achonu, who has received his certificate of return from the national leadership of our party.”

“However, as a political party strongly committed and eager to wrestle power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) across the country, we are not unmindful that few individuals are being sponsored to distract and distabilise the party. This is expected, given that our party has become a beautiful bride in Nigeria; hence, the large number of people who jostled for our governorship ticket.

“We assure Imo people that our party is resolute to send APC packing from Douglas House, and restore confidence of the people in governance through service delivery.

“No amount of intimidation or horse trading will change this.
“We, therefore, advise the government of Imo to channel resources and efforts in redeeming its image, address myriad of challenges, not excluding frightening security challenges in Orlu Federal Constituency, which is the governor’s constituency, instead of pursuing shadows and engaging in wild goose chase.
