Activists warn against return to military dictatorship

Chief Frank Kokori

• Say many don’t value democracy because they haven’t tested military tyranny
• Urges National Assembly, NLC, CSOs to guide democracy jealously

Activists have warned the leadership of the country against return of military tyranny and dictatorship. They said many Nigerians who have not experienced military tyranny do not know the value of democracy.

The activists, who were part of the June 12, 1993 election annulment struggle, specifically urged the leadership of the National Assembly, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to strive and make Nigeria a democratic state.

According to them, the country has been under the stranglehold of cabals for over 24 years and the labour unions, which are supposed to be watchdog of the people and democracy, have watched all the refineries in the country go moribund without any pressure on government to fix them.

Former General Secretary, National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Frank Ovie Kokori, who spoke at an event organised by Coalition for a Better Nigeria, said the country must not toy with democracy, advising labour unions and CSOs to look inward and rebrand themselves as the only organised pressure groups that can rise in defence of the people and democracy.

Kokori urged the President, as one of those that participated in the struggle, to use the opportunity given to him by God to defend democracy.

In the same vein, former President of Ijaw Youth Council, Asari Dokubo, said when the June 1993 presidential election was cancelled, some of them wanted to go into arms struggle, but MKO Abiola was not ready for that.

“So, today, our joy is that one of us who made the sacrifice is now at the saddle and we want him to inaugurate MKO Abiola post-humously as President of Nigeria,” he said.

In his address, the National Coordinator of the Coalition , Awa Bamiji, said if Tinubu’s Presidency serves as an atonement for June 12 election, the government should reserve the position of the Minister for Information and Culture for the coalition.
