The Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has called on the military junta in the neighbouring Niger Republic to respect the country’s constitution by restoring the democratically elected government of Mohamed Bazoum and return to the barracks.

He commended the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for working to restore democratic order in the country, saying the regional body was on the side of history.

Adebayo, who made the call via his verified twitter handle, @Pres_Adebayo, maintained that the coup plotters cannot lead the people when they were not democratically elected, stressing that they would be granted amnesty when and if they hand over power back to Bazoum and return to the barracks.

He cautioned that replacing Western imperialism with that of the East was not the solution, calling for African nationalism, which he said must be democratic.
