A prominent pro-democracy activist, Awa Bamiji, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu for financial assistance to enable him undergo specialised medical treatment abroad following complications arising from a stroke.

Bamiji made the appeal in a letter dated July 15, 2026, in which he recounted his prolonged battle with ill health after suffering a stroke on November 12, 2024.

The Ibadan-based activist said although he had made gradual progress through treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, his recovery remained incomplete and now required advanced medical intervention.

He explained that he still undergoes intensive physiotherapy, speech therapy and continuous medication, describing the cost of treatment as overwhelming.

According to him, he has not fully regained his speech, finds it difficult to walk long distances and continues to experience severe tremors that affect his ability to write and use electronic devices.

Bamiji expressed gratitude to God for preserving his life and commended the management and medical personnel of UCH for the care he had received since the stroke.

He also appreciated several public figures, political leaders and friends who had supported his treatment financially over the past two years.

Among those he acknowledged were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who donated N2 million, and the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, who contributed N1 million.

Others he thanked included former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, former Osun State Governor Bisi Akande, Chief Tajudeen Olusi, Chief Henry Ajomale, retired Brig.-Gen. Tayo Koleoso, former Minister of State for Health Adeleke Mamora, Chief Wale Oshun and other supporters.

The activist disclosed that he also sold his personal Audi car for N1 million to meet medical expenses.

He, however, said the financial support received had been exhausted on hospital bills, physiotherapy, accommodation and other living expenses, leaving him in difficult financial circumstances.

Bamiji appealed to President Tinubu to consider assisting him to access specialised treatment overseas, expressing hope that such intervention would enable him to make a full recovery and return to active public service.

“I remain hopeful that your compassionate intervention will give me another opportunity to regain my health and continue contributing to national development,” he said.
