Ahead of the 2027 general election, the Church of Nigeria, Global Anglican Communion, yesterday called on politicians to allow Nigerians to vote based on their convictions rather than through inducements.

The Bishop of Akoko-Edo Diocese and President of Synod, Revd. Ebenezer Saiki, made the call during the 2026 2nd Session of the 6th Synod held at St Peter’s Church, Ikakumo.

He also raised concerns about the issue of kidnapping in the area, calling for concerted efforts to address it. The cleric noted that, though national discourse is increasingly focused on the approaching 2027 presidential election, as is expected to remain in the coming months, Nigerians must conduct themselves responsibly and with integrity.

“We appeal for decency, fairness, and respect for democratic values. Elections should never become occasions for abandoning the principles we claim to uphold. Nigeria will make greater progress when citizens vote according to conviction rather than inducement,” he stated.

Meanwhile, in the area of security in Edo State, Saiki warned that “Akoko-Edo must not surrender to fear,” adding that “every community has a role to play in protecting its people and territory.

According to him, while the assailants often possess sophisticated weapons, the communities are not helpless and must work together with courage, vigilance, and lawful cooperation with security agencies to strengthen their collective resistance against those who seek to terrorise the land.
