Assault: ActionAid Nigeria demands justice
Actionaid Nigeria has called for the arrest and prosecution of Senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District, Elisha Abbo, who ‘dishonourably’ beat up a woman in an adult toy shop in Abuja.
A statement signed by its Country Director, Ene Obi, said the call became necessary, following the release of a Close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage showing the lawmaker perpetuating the act.
She said: “ActionAid Nigeria received with shock the news of the incomprehensible act of a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Elisha Abbo, whose act could be described as criminal, unacceptable and repugnant to natural justice and order.
“Violence against women and girls is unacceptable. They have rights to be treated with dignity and respect. This should be upheld by everyone, irrespective of their social status…
“We commend the Nigeria Police on some of the actions taken so far, and we will also like to remind the Police of numerous cases of rape and other forms of gender-based violence that had been reported and were yet to be investigated.”
