The Calabar Zone of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has alleged that Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, has concluded plans to force its Acting Chairperson in its state University branch, Ikechuku Okorie Igwenyi, to resign or face harsh consequences.

This was revealed by the Union’s Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Aniekan Brown, while addressing newsmen in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, yesterday.

The Calabar Zone comprises seven universities across four states, including Abia State University, Akwa Ibom State University, Cross River University of Technology, University of Calabar, Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Alex Ekwueme University and University of Uyo.

He said Umahi gave the threat message on Christmas Eve, when political stakeholders paid him a courtesy visit, adding that the governor was accusing their member of being one of those that have made the state not to have peace, an allegation which he said was unfounded.

“It became a cause of worry to the Union that as political stakeholders in Ohaozara, led by the Local Council Chairperson, Princess Nkechi Iyioku and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Samuel Okoronkwo visited Governor Dave Umahi in his country home in Uburu on December 28, 2020, the outcome was a threat to mobilise youths and traditional rulers from the area to occupy Ikechuku Okorie Igwenyi’s home in Abakaliki, to force him to resign and leave Ebonyi State or face some consequences,” he said.

The Union, therefore, called on the people to hold Ebonyi State governor responsible, should anything happen to Igwenyi.
