ASUU strike: UNILAG, OAU, UNIBEN, others announce resumption dates

ASUU strike | University of Lagos UNILAG

Nigerian university students are expected back in class after the suspension of an eight-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The suspended ASUU strike started on Monday, February 14.

Since suspension of the strike on Friday, October 14, a number of universities have released internal memos and circulars announcing their resumption date.

Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) Ile-Ife in a statement by its Registrar, Margaret Omosule, disclosed that student are to resume on Thursday, October 20 for the continuation of the 2021/2022 session.

While, the spokesperson for the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benedicta Ehanire, disclosed that students are expected to return to school on Sunday, October 23 and online registration for newly admitted students for the 2021/2022 academic calendar will begin on Friday, December 2.

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) also released a statement on its website stating that the academic activities will begin on Monday, October 24 and will conclude the semester within four weeks.

“First semester examinations are to hold between Monday, November 28 and Saturday, December 10, 2022, across all levels and faculties,” UNILAG said

“The second semester for the 2021/2022 academic session would commence on Monday, January 9, 2023, and end on Saturday, May 20, 2023.”

Other universities slated to resume on the same day as UNILAG include Bayero University Kano, Federal University Lokoja, Alex Ekweme Federal University Ndufu-Alike and Federal University of Technology, Owerri.

University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) announced that all “Year One B students” for First Semester 2021/2022 academic session are to resume on Sunday, October 16.

UNIPORT also noted that their first semester examinations will take place between Monday, October 24, and Saturday, October 29, and second semester 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions will begin on Sunday, October 30, while lectures will commence on Monday, October 31.

The Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) announced the continuation of second semester for old students on October 17 and disclosed that fresh students will resume school on Monday, October 24.

University of Abuja and the Sokoto State University announced October 24 for school resumption.

Meanwhile, Federal University Lafia said it will resume both academic and non-academic activities on Sunday, October 30 while Sule Lamido University, Karfin-Hausa will open on Monday, October 31.
