Aviators protest assault, demand sanction of Air Force personnel

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)

The Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP) has demanded immediate sanctions for Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel accused of assaulting and brutalising a senior official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at the Obafemi Awolowo International Airport (formerly Port Harcourt International Airport, PHC), Omagwa.

A statement yesterday, signed by the Deputy Secretary, ANAP, Ocheme Aba, also called for an unreserved apology from the Nigerian Air Force to the victim, Ekene Enechukwu, who heads the Operations Department of FAAN at the airport.

The union alleged that the incident occurred on May 11, 2026, while a Deputy General Manager, Enechukwu, was responding to an emergency call over a fire incident at the airport.

According to the statement, the FAAN official was purportedly attacked and bloodied by an Air Force personnel at the military checkpoint near the airport toll gate after his urgency was misinterpreted.

ANAP described the incident as part of a disturbing pattern of assaults on civilian aviation workers by armed security personnel at airports across the country.

It further lamented that repeated complaints over similar incidents in the past had yielded little result, despite concerns raised over what it described as terrifying, uncivil behaviour in a completely civic environment.

The association warned that it would soon unveil further measures to prevent future occurrences following consultations with stakeholders.

Aba insisted that the officer involved in the alleged assault must face severe disciplinary action, stressing that the union would no longer tolerate such behaviour from any quarters.

The statement read in part: “This unprovoked brutality is one too many by NAF and other arms-bearing personnel in various airports in Nigeria. We have had cause in the past, time without number, to call attention to this kind of terrifying, uncivil behaviour in a completely civic environment, but it seems our efforts at doing so have clearly fallen on deaf ears.

“It has become necessary, therefore, to commence further steps that will ensure that such does not occur again. And in the coming days, the agenda for such next steps will be unfolded after due and wide consultations.”
