The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has described the death of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, as a significant loss to Nigeria, citing his longstanding contributions to religious and communal leadership.
In a statement released on Monday, July 14, and signed by its Chairman, Professor Abdullahi Usman, the Commission expressed sorrow over the monarch’s passing, which it noted came at a time the nation is already grieving the loss of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“While we were thrown into mourning over the demise of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, we received the shocking news of yet another monumental loss,” the statement read.
Professor Usman commiserated with the people of Ijebuland and acknowledged Oba Adetona’s influence as both a traditional ruler and religious leader.
He recalled the monarch’s role as Chairman of the Ogun State Muslim Community and his dedication to the welfare of his subjects.
“Oba Adetona will be remembered as a dedicated chairman of the Ogun State Muslim Community who gave his all for the well-being of his subjects,” he said. “As one of the longest-serving monarchs on the throne after a 65-year reign, Oba Adetona made significant contributions to the community, where everyone immensely benefited.”
The Commission extended condolences to the monarch’s family, the people of Ijebuland, and Nigerians across the country, describing his passing as “another patriarchal loss to the nation.”
Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for over six decades, died on Sunday at the age of 91.
