Barely 24 hours after Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State suspended the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of Ningi Council, Nura Dan Maishari’a, for “absconding from meetings”, Mr. Gara’u Adamu of Darazo Council has been suspended for similar case.

The governor’s media aide, Mukhtar Gidado, stated yesterday that Adamu’s suspension followed his persistent absence from office and other official duties, which “violates his oath of office”.The lackadaisical attitude of Adamu and Maishari’a, according to him, is a dereliction of responsibilities, which negates the administration’s purpose.

Mohammed announced the suspension in letters addressed to Maishari’a on Thursday night and that of Adamu yesterday. The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mohammed Sabi’u Baba, signed the letters. He stated, “It was noted that you have not been engaging stakeholders to manage the councils’ affairs. This act violates the principles of representative government like ours.

“Similarly, the council is witnessing indiscriminate felling of trees under your watch, which is inimical to the avowed commitment of the present administration to combat desertification and environmental issues.”

The governor said Maishari’a also deliberately refused to recognise the recently appointed council secretary, whose nomination was in the interest of Ningi. While noting that the suspension took immediate effect, he instructed the suspended council bosses to hand over to their deputies.
