At least 20 people have been killed following a deadly attack by suspected bandits on the Fesken Rafi community in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred earlier in the week, has left the community in mourning, with families searching for victims and residents grappling with the scale of the violence.
Local authorities confirmed the death toll during official engagements following the attack, as concerns continue to grow over recurring insecurity in the area.
In response to the tragedy, the Kebbi State Government expressed sorrow over the killings and extended condolences to the affected families and the wider community.
During a condolence visit on Saturday, the Deputy Governor of the state, Umar Tafida, led a government delegation to Fesken Rafi, where he assured residents that efforts were being intensified to address the security challenges.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that additional security deployments and operational support would be provided to improve response in vulnerable communities.
“We share in your grief and remain committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property across Kebbi State,” he stated during the visit.
Officials from the local government, including the Chairman of Arewa Local Government Area, Sani Tela, and the lawmaker representing Arewa Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Nuradeen Kangiwa, also confirmed the incident and the casualty figure.
They commended the state government’s response while calling for sustained security interventions in the area.
Traditional leaders who accompanied the delegation, including representatives of the Emir of Argungu and the District Head of Bui, urged authorities to improve road access to the community, saying it would enhance security operations and support economic activity.
They stressed that poor accessibility has continued to hinder rapid response during security emergencies.
Authorities say security operations in the area are expected to be strengthened in the coming days as part of ongoing efforts to restore calm.
