Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olabode George, has called for a comprehensive reform of the Nigerian constitution, stating that the current document does not reflect the principles of democracy.
Speaking at the inauguration of the PDP Lagos State Elders and Leaders Screening Committee, George emphasised that the constitution needs to be reformed to ensure that power emanates from the people and not from the top.
According to George, the current constitution is akin to a military constitution, where everybody runs to one man in Abuja for decision-making.
He lamented that since 1999, Nigerians have been living in uncertainty, with both the rich and the poor walking with caution, looking over their shoulders for safety. “That is not governance,” he declared.
George stressed that a democratic system should be bottom-up, where power comes from the people, rather than top-down, which is characteristic of military rule.
He emphasised the need for a new constitution that will promote justice, fairness, and equity, and ensure that the will of the people prevails.
while inaugurating the committee, stressed that the party’s past experiences have shown that external influences and manipulation can lead to acrimony, and that the screening committee will help to mitigate these issues.
He stated that the committee’s role is crucial in ensuring that only committed and dedicated individuals are elected into leadership positions.
According to Chief George, the committee will subject aspirants to rigorous screening, asking questions about their background, commitment to the party, and past activities.
He emphasised that the party is looking for individuals who are solid, grounded, and committed to the party’s ideals, and not just those who jump from one party to another.
The committee’s inauguration is part of the party’s efforts to reorganize and refocus ahead of the 2027 elections.
Chief George emphasised the need for the party to be people-focused and to prioritise justice, fairness, and equity.
He also called on President Bola Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure free and fair elections.
The members of the committee include Dr. Remi Akitoye (chairman), Mrs. Onikepo Oshodi, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, Mrs. Aduke Maina, Dr. Niran Adeniji, and Elder John Agbaje, among others.
