Nigerian singer-songwriter Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ, popularly known as Brymo, has accused some of the country’s biggest music stars of exploiting upcoming musicians by jumping on their trending songs under the guise of offering support.
In a post shared on his Instagram story on Tuesday, Brymo specifically mentioned Burna Boy, Davido, and other top-tier performers, urging them to stop featuring on remixes of new acts’ hit songs. According to him, such moves are less about mentorship and more about maintaining relevance.
“Dear Nigerian mainstream ‘A-listers,’ Burna \[Boy], Davido and Co, stop jumping on every hit song in a remix, especially releases by newer acts,” Brymo wrote. “Let other artistes find their own way. The pretending to be helping them reach higher is a ridiculous watch. Stop seeking relevance in the efforts of ones who know little about the business. It’s vile!”
Brymo further advised mainstream artists to exercise caution before collaborating with rising stars, stressing that constant interference denies new acts the opportunity to build their own audience base.
The singer, known for his outspoken views on the Nigerian music industry, has in the past made controversial remarks on issues ranging from cultural traditions to politics.
