Buhari, Osinbajo, others congratulate Super Eagles, urge them to sustain momentum
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday congratulated the Super Eagles on their victory over the national team of Iceland in their second group match at the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
The President, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, he expressed delight at the confidence, discipline, team-work and indomitable spirit displayed by the players, urging the players not to limit themselves but sustain the current winning momentum by going all out against their last group opponent, Argentina, in the next group game, which comes up on Tuesday, June 26.
“I am confident that if our players believe in themselves, they can qualify out of their difficult group and even go very far in the tournament. With determination, nothing is impossible,” he said. He urged all Nigerians to continue to rally round the players with their prayers and other forms of support.
Also, vice president, Yemi Osinbajo and Senate President, Bukola Saraki joined Nigerians to congratulate the Super Eagles on their first victory. In a tweet by Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, the Vice President said, ‘Congrats Nigeria!’
Akande said Osinbajo found time while in transit between events in Lagos, to catch up on the match.
Also, the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has hailed the Eagles on their victory, saying with the win, the national team has put smiles once more on the faces of Nigerians after their disappointing outing against Croatia.
“Nigerians were full of expectations of victory and did not give up on you after the initial disappointment and you delivered. I urge you to now prove why you are called the ‘Super Eagles’ in your next game against Argentina. Do us proud,” Dogara urged.
He further charged them to maintain the fire displayed in the second half against Iceland, assuring them the support of Nigerians across the globe.
