Buhari tasks women on Nigeria’s progress, unity
Wife of the President, Hajia Aisha Buhari, has called on Nigerian women to be at the vanguard for peace and unity of the country.
Speaking yesterday during the opening of this year’s Women’s August Meeting in Owerri, Mrs. Buhari maintained that the unity of the nation should be of utmost importance to Nigerians.
She said: “The theme of this year’s August Meeting, ‘Women Building Bridges of Friendship Across the Niger’, is apt. The idea of organising this event yearly where women come together to share views on how to improve the socio-economic situation of our states and nation is quite commendable.
“I also see this gathering as a celebration of womanhood. This yearly meeting is important as it provides an opportunity for people from the northern, eastern and western parts of the nation to come together not only for social purposes, but to dialogue and exchange ideas on developmental issues as well as proactively work for unity among Nigerians.”
Mrs. Buhari was delighted that Governor Rochas Okorocha had given women a sense of belonging through roles in nation building.
The governor urged Nigerians to keep praying for the unity of the nation and quick recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari. He submitted that those for the oneness of Nigeria must be recognised.
Okorocha maintained that the country must remain united, adding that women remain bridge builders in the quest for peaceful coexistence.
“Our nation is going through a trying moment. A journey many great nations of the world had gone through before attaining greatness. We are no exception.”
The governor’s wife, Nkechi, said the gathering was to promote unity, friendship and love, asserting that the strength of any society lies in the unity its people.
