Buratai tasks clerics on teachings to counter extremist ideologies

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai has called on clerics to distinguish between corrupt and authentic religious teachings among communities in the Northeast.

Buratai made the call, yesterday, while addressing Islamic and Christian clerics at a seminar on religious enlightenment in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

He said the seminar, with the theme: “Countering Insurgency and Violent Extremism in Nigeria through Authentic Religious
Enlightenment,” was aimed at providing appropriate narratives to defeat wrong religious ideologies used by leaders of terrorists and insurgency groups.

According to him, wrong religious ideologies were being used by Boko Haram to recruit and indoctrinate its followers from society. He added that the seminar was a fall out of an initial programme on counter narrative held last year.

Buratai further disclosed that Boko Haram insurgency was an ideological terror in nature, which required intellectual discourse to counter extremist ideologies.

He said the seminar would help in bringing to fore the urgency for all spiritual leaders in the Army and civil organisations to operate with a framework of modalities, aimed at countering terrorism and wrong religious ideologies.

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State called for more prayers for troops and other security agencies.
