The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Adamawa State Chapter, has expressed concern over the recent communal clashes between the Bachama and Tsobo ethnic groups in Lamurde Local Government Area.
In a statement made available to media men on Tuesday, in Yola, the State CAN Chairman, Rev. Dr. Joel Danjuma Manzo, described the violence as regrettable and disheartening, particularly given the historical ties between the two communities.
He noted that the Bachama and Tsobo peoples have long enjoyed peaceful coexistence, strengthened by intermarriage, mutual respect, and deep-rooted cultural connections.
He urged both groups not to allow land disputes to destroy the unity they have built over the years.
“Even though disagreements may arise between families or communities, we must not lose sight of our shared Christian values, which call us to love one another, live in peace with all, and be our brother’s keeper,” Rev. Manzo said.
The CAN chairman called for a return to dialogue, emphasising that peaceful engagement is the most effective path to conflict resolution. He urged pastors, traditional leaders, elders, and other stakeholders to initiate sincere conversations that could restore calm and foster reconciliation.
“I emphasise the importance of prioritising love, empathy, and understanding,” he stated. “We must pursue reconciliation rather than resort to violence.”
Rev. Manzo appealed to both communities to preserve their long-standing relationship and work towards a future rooted in peace, mutual respect, and unity.
He expressed optimism that with unity and understanding, both communities can overcome the crisis and emerge stronger in their shared efforts to protect their heritage and future.
