CAN in Nassarawa optimistic Buhari will end farmers/herdsmen clash
Bishop Joseph Masin, Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Nasarawa State, says President Muhammadu Buhari will initiated measures to ensure peaceful coexistence between farmers and herdsmen.
Masin made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia on Sunday.
NAN reports that farmers and herdsmen have clashed in several states over encroachment of farmlands and destruction of crops by cattle among other issues.
Masin expressed confidence that Buhari’s experience as a former military head of state would go a long way toward encouraging the two groups to embrace peace.
Yes, he can do it. He is the president of Nigeria. I believe he will find a way to resolve the problems between them.
As for us in CAN, we have committed all the problems to God. That is one of the ways we can assist our leaders,’’ he said.
He urged Nigerians not to condemn government’s slow pace in resolving the crisis, saying the situation demanded careful analysis and peaceful resolution so as to avert a recurrence.
Nigeria is a multicultural and religious country. Mr President has to take time to analyse the situation, put in place all that is necessary so that people will understand that he is not taking sides with any group or religion.’’
Masin said that CAN and other stakeholders have been battling to see how Nasarawa state would enjoy lasting peace and today, something like that was happening.
According to him, the crisis between the herdsmen and farmers has now subsided.
He said CAN had discussed the crisis with the governor, and “I think he has constituted committees. Today, the situation is normal’’.
Masin said the relationship between CAN and the state government was “very cordial’’ and had contributed immensely to the relative peace in the state.
If I have any advice, I go to them. I advise them on the right thing to do so as to improve the living standard of the poor.’’
