CAN urges Igbo in north to disregard Arewa youth’s quit notice

• ‘Only referendum will give Biafra Independence’
• Ganduje assures non-indigenes, diplomats of security

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja, rose from an emergency meeting yesterday, condemning what it described a ‘hasty and ill-informed’ three-month ultimatum handed down by a coalition of northern groups to Igbos resident in the north.

The meeting, according to the Northern CAN Chairman, Reverend Yakubu Pam, condemned the latest display of lack of patriotism by some groups or individuals under the guise of ‘agitation’ and urged the Igbos to stay as bonafide citizens of Nigeria.

Specifically, Pam said the parent CAN was miffed by the quit notice by the Arewa groups to the Igbo and “we have disassociated the Northern CAN from the said order.” Besides, he also called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency revisit the last National Conference report and get the National Assembly to begin legislative processes of contentious matters.

Yesterday, many pro-Biafra groups trooped to the Afara Ukwu Umuahia residence of the IPOB Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and informed him of their resolution to adopt him as the new leader of the Biafra nation.

Their Spokesman Mazi Uchenna Madu said the group’s decision on Kanu’s adoption was taken at an emergency meeting after assessing the sacrifices he has made on the Biafra agitation. While appreciating the group, Mazi Kanu said he was so humbled pledging not to let them down.

Urging that they become united in the struggle, he said that the agitation will continue peacefully and non violently and recommended referendum instead of re-structuring the country.

According to him, restructuring would not effectively address the many problems afflicting the country that keeps prompting agitation for Biafra, hence he urged the Federal Government to urgently conduct a referendum that would lead to the exit of Biafra from Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustee (BOT), Senator Walid Jibrin, said yesterday that it is only a referendum that can give Biafra Independence, not quit notice.

Jibrin interacting with newsmen in his country home, Nasarawa, said that he will not support any thing by any group to bring division in the country, adding that peace and unity are the necessary requirements for the development of any nation.

Citing the example where Britain conducted referendum on European Union membership, he added that due process must be followed before granting independence to any country devoid of crisis.

And amid the palpable fear of insecurity threat, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje yesterday assured non-indigenes and members of the international community residing in Kano of safety.

The governor reminded them that Kano is home to all irrespective of ethnic and religious diversity.Ganduje who spoke while receiving the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II on traditional homage at the government house insisted that Kano known for its commercial and industrial viability has enjoyed peaceful coexistence with non-indigenes and foreign nationals saying no threat would detested the year long mutual relations.

Also, Ganduje remarked that Kano has conferred the indegeneship status on Igbos resident in the state in line with the quest to ensure a more united and prosperous Nigeria.

Meanwhile, a former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has warned Nigeria’s past and present leaders to resist every external, physical and spiritual aggression rearing its ugly head against the nation at this critical period of multiple agitations on how best the country can move forward.

Gowon, at the 2017 Annual Seminar of the Knights of St. John International Commandery 574 held in Abuja also tasked them to shun all acrimony and wrangling predicated on inordinate desires and affection that could split the nation and devote more of their energies on things that can bind the people together.
