Canada-based group, International Council for Local Environmental Initiative (LCLEI), has concluded plans to construct its Africa Regional Office and 10,000-capacity International Centre in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The idea to locate the project in A’Ibom was mooted in Malmo, Sweden during the group’s World Congress, where Resolution 08/22 was passed and Uyo was selected among cities like Cape Town, South Africa and Kigali, Rwanda from the three nominated countries.

Its Regional Coordinator, Prince Ene Baba Owoh (Jr.), in a statement in Abuja, explained that the location of the office in A’Ibom was based on the state’s cleanliness, performance ratings and safe heavens for investments.

Owoh said: “The ICLEI office complex and International Conference Centre expected impact includes value to the state and country, where it is located, as both will host the yearly African Regional Conference.

He also stressed that the execution of the project would attract over 1,250 towns/cities, countries and member organisations to Akwa Ibom with the potential for securing the hosting rights for the ICLEI World Congress.

“The project execution will embrace local participation of indigenous companies and skills, thereby promoting ecotourism and boosting the revenue based on the state. This is in addition to showcasing the cultural homage of the people.”
