China, Nigeria celebrate 75th, 64th anniversaries with cultural heritage

The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, in collaboration with the Chinese Community, has hosted a cultural heritage event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of China’s founding and Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary.

The celebration also marked the Mid-Autumn Festival and 53rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Consul-General Yan Yuging emphasised the strong ties between China and Nigeria, highlighting their recent meeting at the FOCAC summit in Beijing. She stressed the importance of continued cooperation and mutual support, urging everyone to “stand on a new position, anchor new goals, open up new areas, implement new measures, and create new glories.”

Yuging also praised the overseas Chinese community’s contributions to Nigeria’s economic and social development, particularly in charity initiatives like the Renewed Hope and Rebirth from the Light programmes.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Nigeria-China Parliamentary Relations, Mr Jaafaru Yakubu encouraged African leaders to leverage China’s Belt and Road Initiative and President Xi Jinping’s $51 billion pledge to address Africa’s infrastructure challenges.

The event showcased the Chinese Community’s philanthropic efforts in Nigeria, including scholarships for students, support for orphanages, school construction, and financial assistance for low-income earners.

Chairman Dr. Eric Ni of HuaXing Arts Troupe Nigeria expressed his pride in these achievements, noting that they have empowered low-income earners and enabled bright students to pursue their dreams.

“This occasion is a testament to the strong bonds of friendship and cultural exchange between China and Nigeria. As we come together to mark today’s event, I am happy to reflect on some of the achievements of the Chinese Community in Nigeria.

“Over the years, our community has worked tirelessly to empower and uplift low-income earners in Nigeria, while we has also awarded many scholarships to bright and deserving students across the country.

During the event, 40 outstanding Nigerian Arts students received scholarships, and 10 cataract survivors were awarded N100,000 each. This celebration reinforces the strong bonds of friendship and cultural exchange between China and Nigeria, paving the way for a future of shared prosperity and mutual respect.
