A group of Concerned Gambians and Commonwealth citizens have opposed the candidacy of Mr. Mamadou Tangara, The Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, for the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Their stance was yesterday expressed in a letter, to the Chair-in-Office of the CHOGM, the Commonwealth Secretariat, UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and relevant authorities of the Commonwealth.
According to the group, opposing Tangara’s candidacy is not just to ensure he does not get the position but to make the point that there will always be a price for the self-serving actions that public officials take and a day of reckoning, which public servants should never forget and that power ultimately belongs to the people.
The group detailed their reasons why Tangara is unqualified, including his role in misleading the international community on human rights abuses that held in The Gambia under ex-President Jammeh’s dictatorial regime in which he served as Foreign Minister and Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
