Rotary Club of Ogudu GRA has conducted free diabetes, hypertension, blood sugar and malaria tests for traders at Binukonu ultra-modern market, Ogudu, Lagos. The Club also distributed drugs to them.

The screening was aimed at improving the health status of market women to reduce the rate of sudden deaths, which is the trend in the country.

The President, Rotary Club of Ogudu GRA, Tokunbo Opanubi, said this initiative was part of the seven areas of focus of Rotary under diseases prevention and treatment.

The leader of the medical team from Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Sanusi Adebola, said the series of tests conducted included blood pressure for hypertension, glucose for diabetes, sugar level and malaria.

He said from the tests conducted, most of the traders are actually not living healthy, as some of their glucose level is very low, while some of their blood pressure level is very high.

Adebola said these things are expected, as some of the traders are elderly, who experience health conditions as they advance in age.

The Iyalode of Binukonu ultra-modern market, Ogudu, Aderonke Odushoga, commended the medical outreach, noting that “it is important, as many market women are unaware they have health conditions that require medical attention, which sometimes lead to their sudden deaths.”

She advised market men and women to take care of themselves because “good health is wealth.”

“Some market men and women don’t like going to the hospital to run tests on themselves because they believe the tests are expensive for them to afford. With this free medical check up, they are all happy and have turned out massively to benefit from it,” she said.
