A co-convener of the Red Card Movement (RCM) Tony Akabuno has been accused of hacking the Twitter handle of the group for political motives.

The accusation came hours after Akabuno led some members of the movement to endorse the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday.

The Twitter handle of the group, which has been used consistently to criticise both PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress, posted a pro-Atiku Abubakar late on Wednesday.

The handle was earlier used to dissociate RCM from the endorsement.

The pro-Atiku message on RCM’s Twitter handle came after the handle was hacked by Akabuno, multiple persons, including Dr Oby Ezekwesili, said.

Obiageli Ezekwesili, a former education minister convened RCM in 2018 as an apolitical movement of accountable to advocate good governance.

“The world should ask this fellow which other Co-Conveners from the 10 are with them on this perfidious and ignoble agenda? @RedCardMng has not and shall never endorse APCPDP,” Ezekwesili tweeted.

“The world should ask this fellow why he stole the Twitter Handle of RCM,” Ezekwesili said.

Akabuno, a co-chairman of RCM said the misgivings about the presidential candidate of the PDP were unfounded and that only Atiku can defeat Buhari at the polls. Akabuno was pessimistic about the chances of a coalition being championed by Ezekwesili at the poll.

“We believe that it is a myopic and grandiose delusion for anyone to think that any other political party can dislodge this failed APC, apart from PDP,” RCM co-chairman Tony Akabuno said in a statement.

“We feel that those who demonize His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, are either envious, hateful or ignorant. This is a man that has never been indicted by any court of competent jurisdiction anywhere in the world.”

Florence Ozor, also a member of the Movement said RCM was unwavering in showing “red card” to PDP and APC and accused Akabuno of being greedy.

“Please disregard the publication that RedCard movement endorsed Atiki, WE DID NOT, WE WILL NOT,” Ozor said.

“One of our 10 co-conveners @tonyakabuno resigned to work for Atiku. His greed has not allowed him to know that he cannot trade with RCM.”

Prior to Akabuno’s alleged hacking of RCM’s twitter handle, the group had consistently countered activities of the two major Nigeria political parties- the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition PDP.

Earlier in the month, it reiterated its stance of both PDP and APC, saying “Red Card Movement will not support, participate, endorse or champion an alliance that involves any of the 2 dominant political parties- PDP and APC.”

Ironically, Akabuno has been a vocal critic of both the PDP and APC. He was still a critic of the party whose party he endorsed a few days before his sudden affiliation with the PDP.
