Colleague demands prosecution of facility managers over Dr. Vwaere’s death

Dr Vwaere Diaso

A medical officer, Dr. Joy Aifuobhokan, has said that she and her colleagues demand full justice for Dr. Vwaere Diaso who died in an elevator accident at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos.

Following Vwaere’s death, the Lagos State said it sacked and blacklisted the facility managers at the General Hospital, Odan.

Sogunle also said that the General Manager of the Lagos State Infrastructure and Asset Management Agency is to proceed on suspension immediately.

But Dr. Aifuobhokan in an interview with ARISE NEWS on Wednesday, however, demanded full justice for the late Vwaere and urged for full accountability and transparency from the Lagos State government in the prosecution of those responsible for the unfortunate incident.

“A major incident happens and we are given Google statements that oh, this person has been arrested or certain person has been blacklisted,” Aifuobhokan said.

“And you tell us that a Facility Manager has been blacklisted. I am sorry. What are their names? When was this done? Where was this done? A friend died publicly.

“So why? As we all know, a crime has been committed and let’s not see it as in a civil country. This is what is supposed to be done in Nigeria.

“A crime was committed against our friend. And the response to the crime is that those who are responsible and have been found guilty should be prosecuted.

“And then, the full course of the law be taken and that is what we want to see in place. We don’t want to hear that oh, a GM was suspended. Who is the GM, what is his name?

“When was this done? Where are the documentations we need to see as evidence. We can see the evidence that our friend friend died. Her blood is still stained all over the place.

“It is clear as day and this is what we want. And we do not want the focus to be on the installment company or certain people,” she stressed.

She called for an improvement in the healthcare system in Lagos, saying Dr. Vwaere’s death was preventable.

“Vwaere should still be alive if proper preparation was made,” she added.

“There are monitors that you put on a patient immediately they come into the emergency and they are supposed to read all of their vitals.

“When Vwaere got to LASEMS (Lagos State Emergency Medical Services), they put one of those machines on her and up until when she died, it couldn’t read any of her vitals.

“This is LASEMS of Lagos State General Hospital, and you have not one machine that can completely read the vitals of a patient, and this is everywhere from the casualty to the LASEMS.

“So, patients come in and they look at us young doctors and it looks like, oh they are being wicked, or, why are they not attending to me, and then they go on Twitter (Now X) and then they drag the doctors, oh, they are heartless.

“We are not heartless. We are working in a system that does not work. How can a carpenter make a table without wood and nail? That’s what the healthcare system in Lagos is.

“We don’t have the tools to help you… There are doctors who have had HIV, Hepatitis, funny diseases just because they didn’t have the proper kits to protect themselves during emergencies.”
