Presiding over a rape case, Justice Mohammed Tukur Mua’azu Aliyu of the Kaduna State High Court has ordered that Malam Haruna Tukur, 24, be remanded in prison custody till August 4, 2016 for defiling a six-year old girl.

The accused was arraigned in court yesterday for allegedly luring the victim (name withheld) into an uncompleted building in Malali, Kaduna North local government area of Kaduna state, on February 5, this year, to have unlawful sex with her.

According to the prosecutor, Dari Bayero, the accused committed an offence of rape punishable under Section 283 of 1999 Law of Kaduna State, which attracts life in imprisonment.

When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty to the offence and charges. However, following the plea of not guilty by the accused, the prosecuting counsel sought for adjournment to present witnesses and relevant document to prove the case.

On why it took a considerable time to arraign the accused in court, the prosecutor said cases of abuse of minor is becoming rather too rampant, just as he stressed the need to teach those apprehended a lesson to serve as deterrent to others with such questionable characters and ensure confidence of justice to victims.

The presiding judge told the accused, that he is entitled to a learned counsel for his defence when the case comes up in August.
