Court remands NSCDC officer in Kuje prison over alleged forgery

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jubrin Buba, at the Kuje Correctional Facility.

The court ruling followed Buba’s failure to appear for trial on forgery charges brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

According to the ICPC, Buba is accused of fraudulently presenting a forged Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree certificate in Public Administration, dated October 7, 2009.

The ICPC further noted that the forged certificate was purportedly issued by the University of Jos and was used to secure employment with the NSCDC in February 2015.

This act violates Section 366 of the Penal Code and is punishable under Section 364.

The NSCDC officer was first arraigned in 2022 before Justice Asma’u Akanbi at the FCT High Court in Kubwa, where he was granted bail on lenient terms. However, after Justice Akanbi’s elevation to the Court of Appeal, the case was reassigned to Justice Binta Dogonyaro at FCT High Court 46, Apo, for a fresh trial.

The court had scheduled Buba’s arraignment for January 22, 2025, but he failed to appear despite being duly notified, along with his legal counsel. His repeated absence led to a bench warrant for his arrest. Buba was eventually apprehended and arraigned on June 26, 2025.

The court also revoked Buba’s earlier bail and ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Facility. The case has been adjourned to October 27 and 28, 2025, for further hearing.
