Create economic management team, NES tellsTinubu
President, Nigerian Economy Society,Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, yesterday, has urged President Bola Tinubu to constitute economic management team to handle economic issues in the country.
Adenikinju, the immediate past Head of Department of Economics, University of Ibadan, made the call while speaking with The Guardian in Ibadan. He said the setting up of the team has become necessary in the face of economic challenges in the country.
The professor argued that the body was in place during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. He maintained that as it was done in the past where the president of NES was a statutory member of the body, Tinubu must include the current NES president as a member to provide sound input into policy formulation.
Adenikinju said: ”One thing is very important. I am not aware that the President has constituted an economic management team. The last administration did not set it up but there was the Presidential Economic Advisory Council, led by Dr Doyin Salami. But the team was not there in the last administration.
”I want to tell Mr President that the Nigerian Economic Society shouldbe represented there. During the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the president of the NES was a statutory member of the body.
“The reason is that when you are looking at the economy and performance of the economy, the economic association is the right body that should provide an advisory role to the government. It is not starting today; right from the time of the late Prof.OjetunjiAboyade, NES was a very active participant. The same thing should continue.”
