CUPP, HURIWA allege plot to arrest Ugochinyere over trumped-up charges
The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) have raised the alarm over a subterranean plot by retrogressive forces to unlawfully arrest and clamp into detention, House of Representatives member, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, on trumped-up charges.
CUPP, at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja jointly addressed by Peter Ameh and Mark Adebayo, warned of dire consequences if any harm befalls Ugochinyere, the opposition coalition spokesperson in the House of Representatives.
The coalition threatened to confront those they referred to as “political buccaneers” who thought that the only way to shut up the incorruptible mouthpiece of the opposition was to defame Ugochinyere and tarnish his reputation.
CUPP claimed that those behind the plot to arrest Ugochinyere were relying on allegations of bribery of judicial officers, criminal defamation, treason, and numerous other concocted criminal activities.
It accused those behind the attempt to hijack the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to destroy the entire opposition political parties in Nigeria and render Rivers State ungovernable as perpetrators of the planned act.
CUPP alleged: “They are aware that Ikenga has conducted a comprehensive investigation into the land racketeering activities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This dastardly plot aims to take him out and stop the continued exposure of reckless land allocation, grabbing, and Public Relations with lands.
“The CUPP is deeply concerned that these actions are part of a broader strategy to undermine Ugochinyere’s credibility and stifle dissent within the opposition ranks. The allegations being fabricated against him are unfounded and indicate the lengths some people will go to maintain their grip on power and silence critical voices.”
However, HURIWA has called on relevant authorities to investigate an alleged conspiracy to frame Ugochinyere, and the National Chairman of the Action Peoples Party (APP), Uche Nnadi.
The organisation claimed that the two prominent opposition figures were being targeted in a scheme involving accusations of bribing judicial officers. This comes in the wake of Ikenga’s vocal stance on the ongoing crises within the PDP, the political crisis in Rivers State leading to the victory of APP in the local council elections and the recent revelations concerning land racketeering in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, “It is alarming that such a plot could be orchestrated against individuals who are merely exercising their rights to free speech and political expression. This is a clear attempt to silence dissenting voices.”
The association further emphasised that these accusations appear to be a strategic move to undermine the credibility of Ugochinyere and Nnadi. “We believe this is not just about them; it’s about stifling opposition and creating an environment where truth cannot prevail,” Onwubiko added.
