Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has condemned the assault on a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Miss Edema Jennifer Elohor, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, describing it as “inhuman, barbaric, and an affront to national unity.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the lawmaker urged the police to arrest and prosecute members of the vigilante group, known as Operation Udo Ga-Achi, accused of carrying out the attack. He warned that failure to hold them accountable would encourage further abuse of citizens under the guise of community security.
A video circulating online shows the group storming a corps members’ lodge despite the occupants presenting valid NYSC identity cards. Miss Elohor was reportedly beaten, stripped, left bleeding, and subjected to threats that were both humiliating and degrading.
“No Nigerian citizen, much less a young lady serving her fatherland, should ever be subjected to such dehumanising treatment,” Senator Dafinone said, stressing the urgent need to regulate vigilante operations across the country.
He also called on the Anambra State Government to provide adequate compensation to the victim, noting that she had suffered severe physical, psychological, and emotional trauma.
The senator further urged the NYSC leadership to ensure the safety of corps members in Anambra and across the country, reminding authorities of their responsibility to parents and guardians who entrust their children to national service.
“The attack on Jennifer Elohor is a test of our collective resolve against impunity,” he said. “Justice must be served swiftly, perpetrators punished, and reforms instituted to prevent a repeat of such shameful abuse in Nigeria.”
