Dismissed police officer arraigned over alleged murder

A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja yesterday ordered a 45-year old dismissed Inspector of police, Ogunyemi Olalekan be remanded in the Correctional Service Center (Ikoyi Prisons)

Justice A. J Coker ordered his remand after he was arraigned over alleged murder of Kolade Johnson, a 35-year-old man at a viewing center in Lagos.

Following his plea of not guilty to the charge brought against him by the Lagos State Government, the Director of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mr. Gbadebo Oshoala requested that Olalekan remanded at the correctional facility.

The prosecution counsel said, “We ask that the defendant continue to be detained in prison custody before the trial date. Our witnesses are available and we are ready to commence”.

Before the matter was adjourned, the trial judge directed the defence counsel, Mr. Ike Ezekwen to ensure he explains to defendant, the option of a plea bargain agreement before trial commences.

This case is therefore adjourned to January 15, 2020 for trial. The defendant is further remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility. The prosecution team is enjoined to bring their witnesses to court. “

The prosecution alleged that the dismissed police inspector working with Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SACS) of the Nigeria Police Force, committed the offence at 5.10pm on March 31, 2019p at Onipetesi Estate, Mangoro area of Lagos.

“The former police inspector unlawfully killed Johnson by shooting him with a AK47 rifle in the lower abdomen. The offence contravenes Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015”.
