Following the current economic hardship in the country, 523 students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), who were offered admission into various programmes for the 2023/2024 academic session, were unable to pay necessary registration fees and could not take part in the 42nd matriculation and induction ceremonies held at the institution at the weekend.

The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the institution, Prof. Nnenna Oti, during the event, disclosed that out of a total of 6,067 students offered provisional admission into about 58 programmes of study, only 5,544 duly registered after paying necessary fees to pursue their five/six-year-study programmes, promising that despite the challenges, she would continue to run an open door policy.

At the occasion, the VC announced the institution’s resolve to assist indigent students financially and materially to accomplish their desires, noting that despite the hard economic realities.she had always insisted that students enjoy independent power supply for several hours to help them prepare their academic work unhindered.

Oti stressed that under her watch, she must ensure that the years of living up to the mandate/ billing, in terms of “training and equipping students with hard and soft skills as job creators, driven by multi-dimensional culture of excellence and dominance in the manufacturing and oil and gas, among others, commanding heights in the national economy via diligence, hard work, commitment and innovative approaches are maintained.”
