The Edo State Government has taken delivery of 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses as part of efforts to improve transportation across the state.
The state Commissioner for Communication and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, disclosed this in Benin City on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the activities of the government.
Afegbua said the 52-seater buses would soon be deployed across the three senatorial districts to ease transportation challenges faced by residents.
“We are expecting another 50 buses. Our target is 100 units of the 52-seater buses,” he said.
According to him, the buses would help reduce transportation difficulties and improve mobility across the state.
“I don’t want to unveil the distribution pattern yet, but we are going to distribute them across the three senatorial districts to ease transportation and minimise the stress people go through whenever they travel,” he added.
The commissioner also stated that the government was working to create an investment-friendly environment capable of stimulating enterprise and economic growth.
He urged residents to support government policies and better understand the intentions behind them.
Speaking on the recurring flooding in Benin City and other parts of the state, Afegbua appealed to residents to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially in drainage channels, as the rainy season intensifies.
“They should take environmental sanitation seriously and dump refuse only at designated areas. When drains are blocked with waste, water cannot flow freely, leading to flooding that damages homes and communities,” he said.
He noted that both the Federal Government and the state government had issued flood alerts following environmental assessments.
Afegbua added that ongoing road construction projects in Benin City and other areas include side drains designed to channel rainwater safely and reduce flooding risks.
He cited the ongoing drainage infrastructure around the Ramat Park Flyover as part of the state government’s flood control measures.
