As the heartbeat of the nation resonates as the motto for Edo State, the political landscape of the state has consistently proven its political acumen, diverging from the mainstream to make informed independent political decisions without jumping on the bandwagon.

The 2024 gubernatorial does not seem to be an exception to this as the political sagacity and doggedness of the Edo people, seems to again reflect with the type of aspirants that have thrown their hats in for the Edo governorship election in 2024.

Renowned for producing political trailblazers like Anthony Enahoro, Tony Anenih, Tom Ikimi, Samuel Ogbemudia, and Prof Ambrose Ali, Edo State is once again poised for a momentous occasion in the 2024 gubernatorial elections. The caliber of interested candidates for the role of Governor is unparalleled, with individuals such as Dr. Ehizojie Ohiowele, Prof Osunbor, Asue Ighodalo, and Olumide standing out for their exceptional experience and educational qualifications.

Ehizojie Ohiowele

Edo State holds a unique distinction with an unwritten consensus, particularly driven by the majority in Edo South, that it is the turn of Edo Central, encompassing Esanland. Notably, three frontrunners, Dr. Ehizojie Ohiowele (Labour Party), Prof Osunbor (APC), and Asue Ighodalo (PDP), representing the three major parties are come from that zone with the exception of the Olumide who is from Edo south.

Amidst speculations that Asue Ighodalo is the anointed candidate of the PDP, the factionalization within the party in the state, marked by the division between the old PDP led by Dan Orbih and the new PDP aligned with the governor’s faction, creates a challenging landscape for any anointed candidate to assert dominance.

On the other hand, Edo’s political landscape leans towards the Labour Party, evident from the last general elections. Dr. Ehizojie Ohiowele, an accomplished retired banker and an alumnus of Harvard, Oxford, and UNIBEN is a standout candidate within and outside the party. His notable attributes include high intelligence, youthfulness, distinguished pedigree, and a strong affiliation with Benin City, being a true-born and bred individual in the ancient city of Benin.

Oserheiman Osunbor

While Prof Oserheimen Osunbor boasts a rich political history as a Nigerian lawyer and politician, having served as a Senator and Governor of Edo, the prevailing sentiment among the people leans towards a youthful governor. Prof Osunbor, outside the youthful age bracket, faces this as a potential drawback in the eyes of Edo citizens.

As the political temperature rises in Edo State, the impending 2024 gubernatorial elections promise to be a landmark event, with a diverse array of candidates vying for the esteemed position of Governor. These are exciting times for Edo politics as the race hots up for the 2024 Edo state governorship elections.
