El-Rufai picks Hadiza Balarabe as running mate

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has announced the selection of Dr. Hadiza Balarabe as his running mate for next year’s general election.

The incumbent Deputy Governor, Barnabas Yusuf Bala, has opted to go to the National Assembly and has since emerged as the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) candidate for the Kaduna South district.
The choice of Balarabe as running mate continues El-Rufai’s deliberate policy of promoting women, his spokesman, Samuel Aruwan, said in a statement, adding that there are five female commissioners in his 14-member cabinet, a feat he said has never been attained by governors that had much larger cabinets.

Balarabe is the current Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Development Agency, a position she has held since February 2016.

Prior to joining the state government, she was Director of Public Health in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Born in 1966 and from Sanga Council in the Southern Kaduna, the 1988 Medicine graduate of the University of Maiduguri was a Senior Registrar at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital before joining the services of the FCT in 2004.
